©Shoen Photography
Artist Tom Woodruff, has continued his love of art, the sea and natural history by illustrating history books for children. Tom grew up in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids, Michigan, and lived in the Grand Traverse region for more than twenty years. After art and natural science studies at Grand Valley State University, he spent some years as a sailor, merchant seamen, commercial fisherman, and wandering artist. After settling in northern Michigan, Tom became known primarily as a stained glass artist and has works displayed in building throughout the country.
Together, Woodruff and longtime friend, John Mitchell have produced four illustrated history books for children, the newest book, PREHISTORIC GREAT LAKES, An Illustrated History for Children has just been released.
For the past ten years, Woodruff has shared his knowledge and love for Michigan and the Great Lakes region with students and teachers in hundreds of schools, libraries and conferences throughout the region. His Great Lakes Illustration Workshops engage students of all ages in challenging and fun drawing and writing projects, while exploring the history and natural resources of the world. Through storytelling and step-by-step instructions, students become the "illustrator", turning words and ideas into pictures, each in their own unique way.
Tom resides in Fenwick, Michigan with his wife Pamela, twins Kelsey and Patrick, 12, and Lydia, almost 4. Tom also has two grown children, Mary and Dudley.
