Northport Historian John C. Mitchell is among 17 winners of the 2011 State History Awards presented by the the Historical Society of Michigan for his book, Grand Traverse: The Civil War Era released in June.
The awards are the highest recognition presented by the state's official history society, and were presented at the annual awards reception held at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. It's the first time the Historical Society of Michigan has held its annual meeting and state conference in Traverse City since 1874 when it started having them.
This is the second State History Award that Mitchell has received. The first was in 2007 for his book Wood Boats of Leelanau, A Photographic Journal.
